Our history

“We love you, we believe in you, and there is absolutely, positively nothing you can do about it.”

The story of The Rock Academy began with these words. As a novice classroom teacher, Dr. Ahmed White unknowingly planted the seed that would later grow into a school. His philosophy was simple: before students can learn, their personal needs must first be met. In those early years, Dr. White taught lessons on hygiene, cut hair, and intentionally stepped into his students’ world. It was this approach—seeing and supporting the whole child—that unlocked their ability to succeed academically.

For more than two decades, Dr. White has carried this belief forward, advocating for educational equity and creating innovative solutions to level the playing field for underserved youth. When legislation passed in May 2024 creating a pathway for “Opportunity” charter schools, Dr. White knew the time had come to expand that vision. With courage and commitment, he assembled a design team of dedicated educators and community partners to reimagine high school for students who had been left behind.

The Rock Academy became the first Opportunity Public Charter School in Tennessee, created specifically to serve opportunity students in grades 9–12. The school design is specifically for youth who have been chronically absent from school and/or involved in foster care or juvenile justice systems. The school design team, carefully curated by Dr. White, has spent their careers—including hundreds of hours over the past two years—researching and codifying how best to support Opportunity Youth in Nashville. These young people need—and deserve—something different, and they need it now.

At The Rock Academy, we believe we can stop the dropout pipeline through robust and personalized support. We have the power to build a community that supports, celebrates, and creates emotional and physical safety for all students. We have an opportunity to give parents a real choice—especially those who have historically had none. Most importantly, we have the opportunity to re-engage Nashville’s Opportunity Youth and lead them toward a future they deserve.

Our mission

In July 2023, The Rock Academy was officially founded as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Our mission is clear: to re-engage disconnected youth—what we call Opportunity Youth—and ensure they succeed in the post-secondary pathway of their choice.

Designed specifically for students in grades 9–12 who have faced barriers such as chronic absenteeism, poverty, involvement in foster care or the justice system, or other systemic inequities, The Rock Academy exists to stop the dropout pipeline and open new doors of opportunity.

We are committed to building a school culture where every student is seen, celebrated, and safe, and where families—especially those who historically have had no real options—are finally given the power of choice.

An Open Door for Every Student

At The Rock Academy, we believe every student deserves access to a high-quality education—without barriers, labels, or limitations. We are committed to serving all students who enroll, including students with disabilities and English Learners, and to providing the individualized supports they need to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

The Rock Academy is a tuition-free, public charter school serving students in grades 9–12. Enrollment is open to all students and is conducted through a random lottery held each year in March, in accordance with state charter law.

There are no academic, behavioral, or performance requirements to apply for or attend The Rock Academy. We do not recruit students based on ability, test scores, or past school experiences—and we do not turn students away for any reason.

Our school is intentionally designed to be inclusive, flexible, and responsive. Whether a student needs special education services, English language support, academic acceleration, or a fresh start in a new learning environment, The Rock Academy is prepared to serve them with dignity, care, and high expectations.

Together with families and community partners, we create a school culture rooted in belonging, relevance, and flexibility—ensuring every student is seen, supported, and empowered to build a meaningful future.

Opportunity Charter Commitment

As an opportunity charter school, The Rock Academy is intentionally designed to serve students who have historically faced barriers to academic success. In accordance with state law, a minimum of 75% of our enrolled student population will meet the statutory definition of “at-risk” students.

The Rock Academy serves high school students and is structured to reengage learners who may be experiencing or have experienced challenges such as chronic absenteeism, academic underperformance, economic disadvantage, foster care involvement, housing instability, or juvenile justice system involvement.
